Travel Better Club Offers Free Membership!
Sign up by Dec 31st and save $25 annual membership fee!
Not too long ago we featured an article about the nagging guilt that can come from traveling in ways that may not be the best for the environment. Recently we learned about a great program to help us make more informed choices when it comes to venturing out of the hive.
2017 is the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Thanks to a partnership between Sustainable Travel International and the Planeterra Foundation, between now and New Years Day 2017 you can earn a one year complimentary membership in a terrific new club devoted to helping us make more positively impactful travel choices. It’s called the Travel Better Club, and its vision is to build a community of passionate travelers and consumers who wish to be part of the solution when it comes to traveling in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. To save the annual membership fee (a $25 value) all you need to do is sign up and complete a fun and informative interactive learning course.
Travelers who successfully complete the course and pass a brief knowledge check (with do-overs if needed!) receive a Travel Better Certificate and can activate their membership in the Travel Better Club to receive benefits from sponsors and supporters.
The first step is creating an account on the G Adventures website. Then follow this link to the interactive eLearning module. Portions of the course are narrated, so you may want to have the audio up as you navigate through the material and the multiple choice quiz at the end. The whole thing will probably take about a half hour to complete. The material is presented in a similar fashion to the steps involved in taking a trip:
Introduction: Overview of sustainable travel including the positive and negative socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts of tourism.
Trip Planning and Preparation: How to be conscientious when conducting destination research, booking travel providers, determining what to pack, etc.
Onsite Travel: What to be aware of when making decisions in the destination; broken down into four chapters: sightseeing, arts and culture, local cuisine, and nature and wildlife.
Returning Home: Opportunities to continue making positive impact after the trip is over by spreading awareness and giving back to the destination.
Once you’ve completed the course you’ll have to opportunity to download your very own certificate of completion (no fair copying ours ;)).
Travel and tourism are vital industries for destinations both large and small. Individuals and families who inhabit these areas rely on the money spent by travelers for their livelihoods. But when it comes to economic and environmental impact all travel is not equal. We found this course to be full of useful information for the mindful traveler.
Sometimes what may seem like a harmless purchase, dining choice, gesture or interaction can have unforeseen consequences, good or bad. Wouldn’t you like to know that the way you spend your time and money while on a trip not only does no harm but actually provides the most benefit to the local population and environment? Of course you would, and the Travel Better Certificate program is a great way to get started!
